Description

Reclaiming a Legacy: The Unseen Photographs of Mary Walker uncovers the remarkable work of Mary Walker, a little-known Black photographer whose candid images from the 1930s to 1950s preserve everyday moments of joy, community, and resilience.

Mary Walker’s photographs reveal a lively and inviting urban life, spanning the 1930s to 1950s in New York City, Memphis, Florida, and other unknown locations. Walker’s photos show extended families beaming with pride back at the camera, performers lighting up the stage in jazz clubs, night owls gathering in queer spaces, and friends relaxing at home. Other photographs are more intimate, showing both regular people and celebrities like Joe Louis and Ethel Waters relaxing among friends. None of Walker’s images were captured in a studio setting, but she always seemed to know the right moment to open the shutter to capture renderings of Black life and Black joy.

Little is known about Walker herself. Upon her passing in 1985, four bags of Mary’s photographs, journals, and other ephemera – only a small part of her work – were saved from the garbage heap and brought to collector and visual artist Ani Rivera. Rivera carefully saved and archived the collection, allowing Walker’s work to live on in Reclaiming a Legacy today.

“Despite the loss of her untold volumes of documentation of Black life in America, the discovery and preservation in Mary Walker’s veritable treasure trove of images is a gift that should not be squandered…We must not allow her life’s work to join the countless other women artists whose oeuvre have been lost to history.” – Niama Safia Sandy, curator, essayist and musician
