Instinct Extinct is a multi-disciplinary art installation that explores and celebrates the biology, beauty, and bounty of the Pacific Flyway, viewed through a range of lenses: wildlife habitat, agricultural backdrop, recreational commons, conservation story, and inspirational phenomena for artists, writers and everyone in California and beyond. The exhibition is a partnership of the visual artist team – Valerie Constantino, Glenda Drew and Ann Savageau – with various organizations, associations, agencies, scientists, and scholars.

The installation is designed to share, translate, and transmit the poetic essence of the Pacific Flyway through an interactive, inter-media environment, exploring the experience of being with migratory birds and other species within a human-made architectural space.

Exhibit Components:

  • Artistic mapping and sculptural visualization of the flyway
  • Zoetropes manipulated by visitors to create the illusion of flight within the gallery
  • Audio and video recordings of birds, insects, and humans who travel the flyway, and other ambient elements gathered on location
  • Handmade elements including a wall installation of feather prints on rice paper created by visitors to the gallery. Accumulated prints from each site will travel to the next location for further additions
  • Artist-created boxes incorporating natural history specimens and other collected media and imagery
  • Oral histories and interviews with people familiar with the flyway, including scientists, farmers, bird enthusiasts, hunters and environmental educators
