New exhibition Reflecting on the Land encourages visitors to reflect on the physical land that Californians all live on, and its deep and continuing connections to California Native communities. The exhibit, divided into four sections, connects to Native history, sovereignty, and self-determination in the past, present, and future.
Exhibit Sections:
- Introduction: Where are you in relation to this story?
- The Long History of the Land: Whose land are you on?
- Laws and Policy: Whose voices have you been taught to trust?
- Indigenous Futures: What does sovereignty feel like, not just mean?
Reflecting on the Land is an extension of Reclaiming Our Stories: Voices of Indigenous Peoples of California, a six-part podcast series developed by California Humanities that centers California Native voices to explore history, culture, and contemporary life across the state. Through Indigenous-led conversations, artistic interludes, and place-based reflection, the podcast highlights the lived experiences and cultural continuity of Native peoples across California—home to more than 200 tribes. The series invites listeners to engage with history, community, and identity through multiple perspectives and ways of knowing.
Reflecting on the Land is advised by the Reclaiming Our Stories advisory committee.
Reflecting on the Land was developed by Exhibit Envoy in partnership with California Humanities, and tours through Exhibit Envoy thanks to generous funding from the 11th Hour Project, By the People: Conversations Beyond 250, and the Weingart Foundation.
