Description

Dive into the underwater world of bull kelp forests and scientists’ dedicated efforts to help them flourish once more.

Kelp Wanted reveals the delicate balance of underwater bull kelp forests, the forces threatening their survival, and the groundbreaking science driving their restoration. Through stunning photographs and easy-to-understand, conversational label text, visitors will explore bull kelp’s vital role in marine biodiversity; learn how climate change, warming waters, and sea urchin overpopulation have led to devastating declines; and discover the dedicated efforts of researchers, divers, and conservationists working to rebuild these undersea forests.

Kelp Wanted features photographs and writings by Abbey Dias and Pat Webster. Abbey Dias is an artist, scientist, and scientific diver from Seattle, WA, now based in Bodega Bay, CA. She earned her master’s degree studying bull kelp forest restoration in Northern California, through which she helped develop some of the current restoration techniques now used across the state. Born and raised in Europe, Pat Webster developed his interest in kelp forests through UC Santa Cruz’s scientific diving program and frequent visits to his backyard kelp forests in the Monterey Bay, California. His career in marine science education has taken him to the Seymour Marine Discovery Center, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Lindblad Expeditions National Geographic, the Nature Conservancy, SCUBA Diving Magazine, and more.
